FRIARS SUBSTATION PROJECTApplication: A.98-10-011
Project Description On October 5, 1998, San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) filed Application No. 98-10-011 pursuant to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) General Order No. 131-D requesting authority for a permit to construct the Friars Substation Project ("the Project.") The objective of the proposed Project is to provide additional electricity to meet expected load growth and reliability criteria. The Project would be located in the Mission Valley area of the City of San Diego, four miles northeast of the San Diego metropolitan area. The Project is planned to be a 120 MVA substation with four 30 MVA transformers and sixteen 12 kV (kilovolt) circuits. A ten to fifteen foot high wall, approximately 275 feet by 230 feet, will enclose the substation area. Landscaping will be established from the beginning of the Project. SDG&E is a public utility corporation engaged principally in the business of providing electric service to a portion of Orange County, California and electric and gas services to San Diego County, California. SDG&E currently operates six substations in the Kearny Mesa, Serra Mesa and Mission Valley areas of the City of San Diego. A recent SDG&E area planning study indicates that the current capacity of these substations will be reached by the year 2006 and the ability to provide backup from one substation to another will be impaired beginning in the year 2000. As stated above, the intent of the proposed Project is to provide additional electricity to meet expected load growth and reliability parameters.
