Fessler today announced that the deadline for applicants seeking nomination for a seat on the Diablo Canyon Independent Safety Committee is extended through May 3, 1996, to allow ample time for interested persons to apply. The search to fill a three-year term beginning July 1, 1996, is conducted under the terms of the 1988 Diablo Canyon settlement proposed by the state Attorney General, Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), and the CPUC Division of Ratepayer Advocates, and adopted by the Commission. The independent committee assesses the safety of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant operations and has authority to review quarterly reports and conduct on-site inspections. It prepares an annual report of its observations and recommendations which is first submitted to PG&E for response, and then to the CPUC, Governor, state Attorney General, and California Energy Commission. As outlined in the settlement agreement, only persons who have knowledge, background and experience in the field of nuclear power facilities will be considered. The incumbent is automatically considered for renomination.
