         CPUC SETS HEARING SCHEDULE ON PACTEL/SBC MERGER

     The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today
announced the formal hearing schedule in the Pacific Telesis/SBC
merger proceeding.
          July 3, l996          Applicants serve testimony

          September 16          Division of Ratepayer Advocates and
                                intervenors serve testimony

          October 1             Applicants serve rebuttal testimony

          October 7             Parties submit estimates of time
                                for cross-examination

          October 9             Hearings begin

          November 27           Parties file opening briefs

          December 6            State Attorney General files
                                Advisory Opinion

          December 20           Parties file reply briefs and
                                comments on State Attorney General
                                Advisory Opinion

     The U.S. Department of Justice informed the presiding
Administrative Law Judges (ALJ), Kim Malcolm and Janet Econome,
of its intent to publish the Department's initial assessment
within three months.
Public Participation Hearings
     The Commission will hold public participation hearings.
Parties who wish to provide brief statements at the hearings
should contact ALJ Econome no later than August 23, 1996.  The
