         CPUC SCHEDULES UNIVERSAL PHONE SERVICE HEARING

     The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today
announced that all five members of the Commission will hear
testimony on the proposed universal service rules on Tuesday,
August 27, 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the State Office Building,
505 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco.
     Proposed rules were issued by the CPUC on August 2.  The
full panel hearing on August 27 allows for additional feedback
directly to the Commissioners before their final vote on the
rules that's scheduled for their next regular meeting on
September 5.
     Persons interested in participating in the hearing should
contact CPUC staff member Brian Roberts, at 415-703-2334, by
August 16.
